• Do you have a trip to Melbourne on your future itinerary? Have you been searching for the perfect city-centre accommodation that exudes Melbourne’s unique laneway charm and urban street art atmosphere?

Not long ago, I had the pleasure of exploring Laneways by Ovolo, a boutique 4-star hotel nestled in Little Bourke Street’s heart. Situated right on Chinatown’s fringe and a mere stone’s throw away from Melbourne CBD, let me provide you with an insider’s view on my encounter with their retro-inspired accommodation.

Accommodation Options at Laneways by OvoloDespite its petite size with a collection of only 42 rooms, Laneways by Ovolo, right in the soul of Melbourne, boasts a variety of room choices. The selection ranges from studios, one and two-bedroom suites, to exclusive top-floor suites with terraces, even a penthouse with its own jacuzzi.

During my stay, I got to experience both the Midtown 1-bedroom suite and the 2-bedroom Memphis Terrace suite on the top floor.

My Experience at the Midtown 1-Bedroom Suite

The Midtown 1-bedroom suite I resided in was situated on the first floor and was tastefully furnished with vibrant fixtures and fittings. It consisted of all essentials such as a cozy queen bed, exquisite walk-in rain shower, flat-screen TV and desk.

A noticeable level change in the room led to the separate lounge area, adding a distinctive element to the room’s architecture. The suite was a balance between roominess and comfort, making it an ideal choice for a couple’s getaway.

The high-speed Wi-Fi access, free of charge, facilitated seamless connectivity throughout my residence. In addition, it featured a desk, perfect for those needing to catch up on work while on the move.

The suite was endowed with large windows in the bedroom and lounge, each outfitted with blackout blinds. However, my room was situated overlooking a charming, slim lane and neighbouring brick construction, which somewhat muted the room’s overall brightness, despite the large glass panes.

The rate for the suite starts at A$297 a night, proving its merit in terms of its situation and the amenities it offers. These benefits more than make up for the slightly darker ambience of the room, which could easily be overlooked while you’re occupied with city exploration during the day.

My Experience at the Memphis Terrace Suite

Another gem within the property was the Memphis Terrace Suite on the top tier, one of their coveted two-bedroom suites.

Upon setting foot in the suite, I was greeted by its distinctive design, with the sprawling kitchen cum lounge area opening up to a broad balcony. This balcony gifted a panoramic glimpse of Melbourne’s surrounding high-risers. It serves as your private oasis amid the city’s vitality.

The suite had a contemporary yet retro look that was indicated across its landscape, making it an allure after a long day of city exploration.

Both bedrooms housed mega cozy king-sized beds and a separate lounge for unwinding with some evening cinema.

Aside from the suite’s luxurious interior, it was the small, added touches, like the full-sized refrigerator and ample kitchen/dining table, that truly amplified its homely feel. Their dishwasher would undeniably be a game-changer for extended family holidays.

On quiet nights in, there’s a dedicated wine fridge to maintain your chosen wine bottle at optimal conditions. In Melbourne’s mild weather, the terrace is envisaged to be a coveted space for enjoying tranquil evenings with a beverage.

Facilities at the Laneways by Ovolo

Upon entering the rooms, I was greeted by some generous welcome treats, which further warmed my arrival, on top of the already delightful reception by the lobby personnel.

One highlight is that the minibar located in your room is completely charge-free. You’re exempt from paying extra for any snacks and drinks – a charming refinement that makes your stay with Ovolo more valuable.

The “breakie to go-go” that was delivered to my doorstep in the morning was perfect for lounging before bravely facing Melbourne’s cool mornings outdoors.
The hotel also houses Amphlett House, a bistro, in the basement. Staying true to the Ovolo character, the establishment provides a social hour where the first drink is complimentary. While I wasn’t able to partake, the concept seems like a delightful way to relax after a day of Melbourne adventures.

Hotel Location in the Midst of Melbourne’s Chinatown

Where you stay in Melbourne is crucial, which makes the placement of Laneways by Ovolo amidst Melbourne’s lively Chinatown highly advantageous.

Its central positioning allows comfortable walking access to iconic laneways, thriving markets, and various delightful dining options. This setting lets you effortlessly explore the finest elements Melbourne’s Chinatown and CBD have to offer. A leisurely stroll to Fed Square will take you a mere 15-20 minutes.

In addition, the hotel’s location forms a bridge between the city’s vibrant centre and the trendy suburbs of Fitzroy and Collingwood, making it an ideal base for your targeted suburban explorations.

These hip areas are just a quick Uber ride or a 20-minute walk away, landing you in Melbourne’s most vibrant suburb.
